History
The Taekwondo Schools Curriculum Project has been running since 2019. It has been running as a full year project. In its current format in Ladybarn Primary School the children start their Taekwondo journey in September and grade once per term (every three months for three terms). The aim is that they are able to finish the project as Green Tags and have enough momentum and enthusiasm for martial arts to carry on their journey in a local club.
The sessions are both practical and classroom based. In their classroom studies they focus on personal development through basing their learning around understanding and applying the tenets. In addition, the children learn the geography and history of Taekwondo and learn about the GB Team and focus athletes. This is brought to life- in the programmes current form - by the visits to the GB National Centre.
In the practical sessions, we aim to focus on the energetic and dynamic elements of the curriculum.
We use pad work and focus on the kicking range of techniques, building up to sparring. There is less emphasis on the self-defence and poomsae elements of Taekwondo due to the shorter lessons and the curriculum structure.
The core of this project is personal development. It is designed to be fun, exciting and have the right level of challenge to maintain high engagement. 100% of the Year 3 participants* rated this project as both enjoyable and challenging!
