The 5 tenets

At the core of this project is personal development. This is much more than just learning to kick, block, strike and get fitter and stronger - although those are great outcomes! The character and personal development, based around the tenets, is what makes this project so successful. The 5 tenets are listed below.

Tenet #1

Courtesy

The first tenet is to show courtesy - we model this and the children learn the importance of politeness and respect for others, behaving in a well-mannered and civil fashion.

Tenet #2

Integrity

Tenet two is integrity. To do the right thing even when no-one is watching. We develop this in the children so they can understand and model good character, honestly, prudence, and decency, and understand about behaving ethically and morally.

Tenet #3

Perseverence

Tenet 3 is what many successful people credit as the core reason they succeed; they didn't give up. The children will be taught the importance of purposefully pursuing a course of action despite of difficulty, resistance, or discouragement.

Tenet #4

Self control

Tenet 4 is critical in martial arts but is obviously a transferable skill. To be able to manage your emotions and your actions is so important for a successful and happy life. We emphasize the value of managing your emotions, desires, and impulses and exercising control in expression.

Tenet #5

Indomitable spirit

The final Tenet is Indomitable Spirit. The children will learn that if you have the courage and resolve that you can create a spirit that can’t be broken or conquered - the strength of spirit that comes from the knowing yourself and realizing your purpose.

I've seen the enthusiasm for Taekwondo when the children in the Kickstart Change project visit the National Centre and it fills me with joy when I see how inspired they are from the experience. I have heard from Ian about the successes for improving the children's fitness, confidence, and behaviour. Ian is an inspiration in his own right and British Taekwondo could not ask for a better person to lead this programme. Taekwondo has had a life changing impact for me, and I think it's a great idea to get it into schools and hopefully the children continue outside of schools in their local clubs.
